If you've ever had a severe toothache, then you probably already know that the only thing you can think of is getting rid of the pain. You'd do just about anything, including removing the tooth. "Just yank it out of there, Doc, and I'll be on my way", is a pretty common statement made by patients that are in this condition.
When you really think about it, what makes more sense - would you rather have a big hole in your jaw from removing a tooth, or would you rather have a conservative procedure that rarely creates a major issue and you get to keep your tooth? Why is it that if someone tells you that you need a root canal or just mention the word "root canal" and people start to freak out or make a joke about it?
The fact of the matter is that when we do a root canal, it is an extremely safe, pain-free procedure that our office provides on a daily basis. Although it's an intricate procedure from the dentist's perspective, it isn't any more complicated than other dental procedures that people don't think twice about. The dentist is basically just cleaning out the infection on the inside of the tooth, which is really no different than cleaning out a wound anywhere else on the body.
Root canals are not a procedure that every dental office will provide, but we have saved thousands of teeth with this procedure for over 30 years. It's really a sad fact that this procedure has gotten such a “bad rap” over the years, because well over 90% of the root canals in our office that we perform are finished with little or no pain, and the discomfort patients experience is usually gone in a few days. With the improvements in technology, the procedure is quicker and more comfortable than in the past, and most patients actually say, "That was no big deal!" after the root canal is finished.
Please call our office if you have any questions or doubts about this procedure. We would love to help you realize how easy this can be.
