
An untreated cavity has infected the pulp and caused an abscess.

The pulp (nerve tissue) inside the tooth is cleaned out and medicated.

With the infection eliminated, the canals of the tooth are filled and sealed.
- A tooth that has had root canal treatment can usually be restored to last as long as any other tooth.
- With modern dentistry, root canal treatment can be performed with no discomfort.
- After root canal treatment, the tooth will need to be restored. This is often done by using a crown (cap).
- The cost of a root canal and a restoration is usually less than the cost of removing the tooth and replacing it with an artificial one.

- Many times it is necessary to build up the tooth with a core and/or post before fitting it for a crown.
